November 27, 2018

Hi all!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

1. Last Thursday's parent and teacher (that was cancelled) is now this Thursday. The same times as last week. If you would like to have an interview before that, or that time does not work for you this week, please let me know and we can work something out.

2. I sent home some sheets that the children have accumulated since school started in their homework bag. Please take them out, and do as you wish with them.

3. Just a friendly reminder that clothing orders for the school are due tomorrow. :)

4. We are finishing up small moments writing this week. The children have done a wonderful job, and the next unit of writing we are going to work on is narrative.

5. In math, we are working on representing numbers up to 100, place value, and fact families.

6. In Reader's Workshop, we are continuing to work on making connections, and self monitoring. If you could ask your children if they can make a connection to something they read today (each night), and have them discuss it with you, that would be lovely.

7. In word work, for this week, we are going to be working on the Magic E, and how it magically changes the vowel sound. This is a review from last year, and are doing it before we go into vowel teams.

Thanks and have a beautiful week!

November 22,2018

The current weather forecast indicates that there is a blowing snow advisory in effect for all of PEI, with winds expected to increase between 6 and 7 PM.   This is expected to result in poor visibility and hazardous travel conditions.

As a result of the above:

1)  All After School Student Related Activities are canceled for this evening.

2)  In consultation with the Department of Education, all Parent Teacher Interviews schedule for this evening are to be postponed for one week to next Thursday, November 29.  Parents who have interviews this evening, will have the same scheduled time next Thursday.

If Provincial government offices are closed in any area of the Province tomorrow parent teacher interviews will be canceled.  Your child's teacher will contact you to reschedule your Friday appointment.

If Provincial government offices announce a delay in opening in the Charlottetown area tomorrow, interviews that occur after the delay will proceed as usual.  Parents who may have interviews during the delayed time will be contacted by your child's teacher to reschedule your appointment.

We are sorry for any inconvenience.

All the best,

Anne Hall

Hi all!

Just a few notes:

1. Please don't forget to sign up for parent teacher interviews this week. If you are having trouble send me an email and we will book you a time.

2. You may want to send an extra pair or two of socks with your children. A lot have been saying their feet are soaked, so a nice fresh pair would be great!

3. We are going to the Book Fair tomorrow, Wednesday, November 21, at 9:00. If you would like to send money for your child to get a book during this time please just set it in their homework bags.

4. I look forward to seeing you all this week to discuss your child's progress!

Hi Folks,

Here are our notes for the week:

1. There will be no school on Thursday, November 8, and Friday, November 9 due to the Annual Convention.

2. There is also no school Monday, November 12, due to Remembrance Day.

3.On Line Parent Teacher Interviews
Parents will be able to access our online registration from November 5 – November 21.  If you have booked a time online, and it does not work for you later on, it can not be changed on the site. You may contact me, and we will figure out another time that works.

5. Since this is a short week, we are continuing to work on the same words this week.

6. For homework this week I am sending home two reading comprehension sheets instead of reading books. Your child can read the story and answer the questions independently. If you are noticing your child is struggling with the reading, you can read the story and questions to the child. Thanks!

7. Home and School is doing a catalogue fundraiser which was sent home Friday. This fundraiser has tremendous potential, with upwards of 48% of sales staying with the school. Here is a link to the product being sold http://www.dfscanada.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/New-Version-Book-1-Joy-%E2%80%93-48-pages.pdf.

October 27, 2018

Hi everyone!

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.
Here are a few notes for the week:

1. I now have a microwave! Starting Monday, students can bring items in that need to be heated.

2. Retakes for photos are Monday, October 29.

3. Halloween Celebration - Wednesday, October 31.
Please have your child come to school in their costumes. They are able to wear a mask during the parade, which will start at 9:00. Just a friendly reminder no prop weapons, and if you are bringing treats in for our class party they have to be peanut free!

4. This week we will be working with compound words for wordwork. I will post a list of words on Monday. In Reader's Workshop, we are working on thinking about our reading. Students have been reading, stopping, and thinking about their reading last week. We are going to continue to work on this. In Writer's Workshop we are continuing to focus on a Small Moment, and giving details. This week we will be talking about ways to unfreeze our characters in a story. In math, we will be working on ordinal numbers, and assessing of the outcomes we have already done so far this year.

5. Please remember it is getting much colder out, and it is very important we have the children dressed appropriately for outside. Thank you!

6. Parent-teacher interviews are coming up soon.
This year we will be using an online appointment scheduler to set up parent-teacher interviews.
This system will allow parents to set up their own interview times.  Instructions on using this system will go home on Tuesday, Oct 30. These instructions outline how to register and book appointments. Although parents will be able to register on Tuesday, parents will not be able to book appointments until Nov 5 (tentative). This delay will permit some teachers to prearrange some interviews.
Please note, our guaranteed interview days are Nov 22 (5:00pm to 8:00pm) and Nov 23 (8:30am to 3:00pm). Some teachers may offer additional times/dates but they are not required to do so. Please also note, families of EAL students needing interpreter support should not use this system. The Association for Newcomers to Canada will contact EAL families with their interview dates and times. Interpreter supported interviews will be held on Nov 27, 28, & 29.

7.  From the office: (I sent a copy of this home as well) :)

Student Drop-Off and Parent Parking
Friendly Safety Reminders
  •  Students should not get out of vehicles until the vehicle has reached the “Drop Students Here” signs.
  •   Parents should not get out of vehicles in the drop-off loop. The loop is intended for students who are able to get out of vehicles on their own.
  •  If parents need/wish to get out of the vehicle, even for a brief moment, we ask that parents park their vehicle in a parking spot and then walk their children to the large gate behind the “Drop Students Here” signs.
  •  When leaving please watch for pedestrians and other vehicles.
  •  Rushing through the drop-off loop and parking lot is dangerous. We ask that parents leave enough time so that they can slowly and safely maneuver the drop-off loop and parking lot.  Please do not pass other vehicles.
  • Please leave yourself lots of time and be patient.
  •  We encourage families to use the PSB bus service.

I think that is all for now! Happy Halloween all!

Sarah

Hi all! Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Here are the notes for the week:

1. From the office:

The Stratford Schools Community Playground committee is holding an online auction in support of the new playground. The auction opens today and runs until Nov. 24. This is a great opportunity to get some holiday shopping done while supporting a great cause. There are lots of great items, so be sure to check it out and start bidding!
Thank you in advance for your support!

https://www.32auctions.com/stratfordplayground

2. Friday, October 26 is wear Orange and Black Day.

3. Book orders should be in this week. :)

4. On October 31, at 9:00, the whole school will be doing a Halloween Parade. This is the only time that the children are allowed to wear masks with their costumes. After that, their mask needs to go into their school bag. Also, no prop weapons are allowed at school that day. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

5. Also, on Wednesday, October 31, we will be having a little party to celebrate. If you would like to bring a treat in with your child that day feel free! As long as they are peanut free. :)

6. It is getting colder outside, so please have your students dress appropriately for the weather. Also, please make sure everything is labelled, so your child does not lose their items.

That is it for now!

Have a wonderful week.

October 15, 2018

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Here are the notes for the week:

1. Notes from the office I received today:

a) Parents should no longer be escorting their children to their classrooms in the morning.

b) The office is requesting that if your child has had breakfast at home in the morning, they are not to come in for toast as they are currently feeding over 300 children a day, and that is quite unmanageable. I will be talking with the children about this tomorrow, and if you could reinforce it at home as well that would be great.

2. Book orders are due Wednesday. Thank you for those that have ordered online, and brought orders in! :)

3. There is no school this Friday, October 19, as it is a Professional Development Day.

4. The spelling words for the week are:

1. grade
2. green
3. great
4. ground
5. proud
6. prize
7. print
8. try
9. treat
10. trick

5. We will be continuing to skip count forwards and backwards by 2,5's, and 10's this week, as well as the doubles plus one strategy for mental math. They are catching on well to both! :)

6. In Writer's Workshop, we will be focusing on zooming into a small moment, and writing as many details in order about that moment in order, with a beginning sentence, closing sentence, and using transition words (first, next, then, after that, finally).

7. In Readers Workshop, we are focusing on stopping and thinking about our reading, as we read a story. We have talked about the many ways we can become a stronger reader in Grade 2, and they are doing wonderfully. The next step we will take also has to do with comprehension, and asking the three main questions when we are reading, to self monitor and comprehend the text.

1. Does that make sense?
2. Does that look right?
3. Does that sound right?

We have a wonderful group of workers in this class!

Thanks again all! Have a glorious week.

Sarah

September 22, 2018

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend.

It was so nice to see you at the Meet the Teacher last week. :)

We are continuing to work on our routines and procedures this week. Our class is doing wonderful at it! In math, we are reviewing their addition strategies, as well as working with the numbers 1-100.

Here are a few notes for our week:

1. There is no school Friday, September 28, as it is a Professional Development Day for the school.

2. On Thursday, September 27, Glen Stewart Primary will be celebrating Orange Shirt Day. Many schools across Canada will be participating in Orange Shirt Day. Since it began in 2013, participation in this day is an opportunity for teachers and students to bring awareness of residential schools and is also an invitation to reconciliation.

3. When parents are dropping off students, please do not exit your cars.  If you need to exit your car, please park your car in a parent parking space.  Parents who are dropping off their children need to have their children exit their car at the “drop students here” sign, near the loop’s exit.

4. This is our first week celebrating Star of the Week! Every Friday (or the last day of the school week, our class will do a random draw for our Star. That day, a letter will be sent home, as well as a poster for them to complete. They will return with the poster on Monday. We will make time each day to celebrate that student.

One thing that is not in the letter, is that each student is able to bring in five photographs of themselves, and their family, friends, pets, etc... this is not mandatory, but they have the option if they wish.

Parents will be asked to write a letter for Wednesday, that will be given to your child. It could be a memory ,and accomplishment, anything you wish!

Our first star of the week is Mara!

5. If students wish to bring in a coiled scribbler, or a journal to write and draw in, feel free to send it. I do not mind at all! There have been a few students who have been asking.

That is all for now! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to message!
