Saturday, February 9,2019

Hi everyone!

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

Here are a few notes about our week and upcoming dates:

1.
            -      February 12 - I will be sending a note home on Monday to let you know about a BIG writing project that the Grade 2 English group are heading up.

  • PLEASE DO NOT TELL THE CHILDREN AS IT IS A SURPRISE!!!
  • We are working closely with the Island Storm to show the children how powerful their writing can be. It will start on this day.
  • Volunteers will come in from the basketball team, and read the children a persuasive story. They will generate a discussion about a time they persuaded someone to do something and how they had to have good reasons in order to do so. Then they will ask the children if they would like to come to a game.
  • They will then have to write me a letter to "persuade me" to take them to the game.
  • The Island Storm have been generous enough to provide us with a ticket for each child, as well as 1 ticket for a parent/guardian for Sunday, March 3.
  • There will be more details to come! I am so excited about this opportunity for the children!

-          February 14 is a school spirit day. It is a very busy day in Grade 2B.
  •      We are asking student to wear pink or red.
  •      In the morning, we will be having a volunteer that specializes with micro:bits, and coding. The students will be using this hands on tool, to aid in technology, and to make coding easy, fun, and accessible.
  •       In the afternoon, we will be having our Valentine's Day party, as well as a board game afternoon, as the children chose that as their reward for filling the jar with marbles. I am asking that if people could bring some board games that would be great, as I do not have many at all.
  •       If you need a list of names, send me an email. I sent them home in homework bags, but some students were absent, and others did not have their bag. Let me know and I will send one along.
  •       If you would like to bring in a treat, or drink for the afternoon, please feel free.

-          February 20 is 100 day.
  •      We are asking students to dress like they are 100 years old.
  •       This will be the second visit from Island Storm, just checking in to see how the student's writing is going.

-          February 18 is Islander Day and there will be no school.

-          February 19-25 – We are asking parents to complete the OurSchool Online Survey from the Department of Education.  The link will be sent to parents on the 19th.

-     February 21 - Parents are able to start signing up for Parent Teacher Interviews.

-          February 27 is pink shirt day.

2. Our word work for the next couple of weeks is going to focus on "No excuse Grade 2 Words".  These words are words that your children should be able to spell by the end of Grade 2. I have noticed in their writing, that some are still struggling writing these high frequency words, and we are going to be practicing them over the next couple of weeks. If you would work with your children on them at home as well that would be great!

          1. was
          2. because
          3. right
          4. were
          5. every
          6. went
          7. yesterday
          8. who
          9. could
          10. what
          11. house
          12.  have

3. If I have not sent homework books home with your child, and you are seeing other books, please continue to read those books with your children for 10-15 minutes a night. If they have brought home a chapter book, just let them read a chapter or two a night, discuss it, and when the book is completed, your child can bring it back and trade it in. Even if it is during the middle of the week.

4. Book Orders will be due on Thursday, February 14.

5. Thank you for all of your hard work with your children at home with doing their homework! I truly appreciate it. the home support is so lovely to have, and makes a huge difference in your child's learning, even though it is just a little bit a night! Again, thank you!
